Building the Knowledge-Based Economy

Through its established Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Program, CRDF provides business training to local researchers and introduces the local business community to their potential partners. In addition, this program offers learning environment for Azerbaijani entrepreneurs/companies to supplement their work experience by providing them with expert reviews of their business plans, helping them prepare concise presentations and executive summaries of their prospective technologies, and training them in pitching their concepts to an international audience of investors and potential strategic business partners. American experts are involved in providing the training.

Education of the Next Generation of Researchers

CRDF, Azerbaijan National Science Foundation (ANSF) and Azerbaijan Ministry of Education (MoE) granted a $300,000 award to Baku State University to establish a modern, well-equipped, interdisciplinary center to integrate environmental science research into the academic curricula and
provide new opportunities for young investigators in biology, chemistry and geology, 50% of funding for this program came from the MoE.

Establishing World-Class Laboratories

In 2006, laboratories at four leading institutes of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (Institute of Botany, Institute of Petrochemical Processes, Institute of Geology and Shemakhy Astrophysical Observatory) each received a $40,000 grant from CRDF to upgrade their equipment.

These award recipients achieved the goals of the program and successfully modernized their labs. The program, which was co-funded by ANAS, also gave the young researchers of Azerbaijan an opportunity to receive training and carry out research projects using the new modern equipment. All four projects have been successfully completed.

Building Strong International Collaborations

Since 2002, CRDF has supported 36 U.S.-Azerbaijan collaborative research projects valued at about $1.7 million. These programs increase cooperation between the basic and applied research communities of Azerbaijan and the United States and advance the creation of a knowledge-based economy
in Azerbaijan.
