Establishing World-Class Laboratories

E-mail Print PDF
In 2006, laboratories at four leading institutes of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (Institute of Botany, Institute of Petrochemical Processes, Institute of Geology and Shemakhy Astrophysical Observatory) each received a $40,000 grant from CRDF to upgrade their equipment.

These award recipients achieved the goals of the program and successfully modernized their labs. The program, which was co-funded by ANAS, also gave the young researchers of Azerbaijan an opportunity to receive training and carry out research projects using the new modern equipment. All four projects have been successfully completed.

Improved Crop quality and productivity

The Laboratory of Molecular Genetic Basis of Productivity Processes of the Institute of Botany of ANAS used the grant funds to purchase Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) equipment. Academician Jalal Aliyev’s research group has successfully carried out his research project using the newly purchased equipment.

Their research will help make progress in detection of various crop diseases and selection of parental forms and hybrids of special importance for crop breeders and farmers. Dr. Aliyev’s research is also aimed at in improving the crop quality and productivity through development of new
crop varieties. This project also allowed students from the Biology Department of Baku State University get access to modern equipment and apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.

Regional Center of Excellence in Environmental Research

Dr. Bahruz Suleymanov heads a group of scientists who won a grant from CRDF to purchase state-of-the-art equipment to conduct comprehensive research in environmental physics and chemistry with a focus on environmentally hazardous contaminants.

It should be especially noted that the obtained equipment also made it possible to perform important contract work for industry and to attract talented young people into the laboratory transforming the lab into a new center for research and technology development.
