The Alternative Energy Workshop was held in Baku on February 17-18, 2005 at the conference hall of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The Azerbaijan National Science Foundation (ANSF) organized the workshop jointly with the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF).

This workshop was an "attempt" to create a mechanism that will allow scientists and business people to find each other, in other words to create a symbiosis of the experience and resources of entrepreneurs, ideas of scientists, and possibilities of CRDF grant programs. Taking into consideration the fact that there are not so many scientists working in this sector, ANSF invited all of them without any competition. Commercial scientists not affiliated with academic institutions and universities have also been invited. The workshop brought together 32 scientists.
